Attached is a little something I think you'll enjoy, courtesy of SSE librarian Bill Musser. Turns out, we have the original photo prints from the 1988 article, just sitting in a folder.
I went to the library hoping to get a scan of the original print publication, because I had noticed on the website that the photos looked like copies of copies. I never dreamed that we would still have the original photo prints! When Bill pulled them out of that file folder...that was quite the moment, seeing those same images in bright living color.
I coordinate our plant evaluation program at SSE--among my responsibilities is taking photos and scans of plant material for documentation of each variety. I archive thousands of images each year. It's easy for a certain complacency to set in--I always try to remind myself that someday someone might be depending on the quality of those images to tell them something important about the variety. Finding those Iowa Blue photos is powerful motivation for the work I'm doing.
