Welcome 2016 - looks to be a year of promise and fun Treasurer of the Iowa Blue Chicken Club!
Nearly nine years ago, we started out with a pair of runner ducks and 2 LF RIR's, which I bought for our boys for Easter. The runner ducks were named Hillary and Barack. It was fun to watch them run! That's when my husband, Eric's, interest in poultry began and became a family event.
First a pair of Sebrights, "Mr. and Mrs. Chicken". With this pr we got to enjoy or hate the attitude that comes with a bantam rooster. Mr. Chicken hated my blue Crocs and our youngest sons butt! He ended up going to "the farm".
Eric and the boys built a coop in our garage, (of course under my supervision), by then we had bantam EE's and a pair of Serama, and "Mrs. Chicken" stayed here. She was cross beaked but very nice. She became the alpha female and crowed! Kind of scary to hear the first time.
We began attending poultry shows and picking up some rare breeds. We also learned that we could not have chickens in town unless by written permission of the City Council. That began a civics lesson. We appeared before the Council and were granted permission to keep the "livestock", which we called "pets", for a period of one year to evaluate the situation. We passed with flying colors and each year have to appear before the same body for consent for another year. Somewhere in all this, we began exhibiting, and meeting others in the fancy and experimented with different breeds. At some point again, Eric found some Iowa folks who were interested in getting into Iowa Blues. So we ended up with 48 chicks in our basement, brooding until they were big enough to be dispersed. It was not until later did we realize that his was not the original type!
And the story continues from there.
My real job, aside from being poultry supervisor, is a Head Start, Assistant teacher in Milford, IA which is in the NW corner of Iowa
I look forward to meeting more of you and assisting in any way needed, to help this club grow. The idea of "people before points" and "quality before quantity", as my husband says, should be our banner!
Please contact me with any concerns or questions!
